What to do in Thio ?

Thio is a haven for nature lovers, offering a perfect escape into the wild, untouched beauty of New Caledonia’s East Coast. This area, still largely unspoiled, is ideal for those who appreciate rugged landscapes, with options for hiking and horseback riding. Take the trail to the summit of Mount Bota Méré and be rewarded with stunning views over the lagoon and the Thio Valley. Relax on Moara Beach under the coconut trees and tropical vegetation. Immerse yourself in the region’s history by visiting the nickel mine on the plateau and the Mining Museum. To top it all off, don’t miss the chance to explore the “forgotten coast” by canoe or discover the vibrant underwater world of the lagoon through scuba diving.

Thio, a destination to discover

Not many people go there, it’s on the other side of the Central Range, so Thio is still pretty much unknown. And yet it’s full of treasures: the Plateau Mine, the Forgotten Coast, petroglyphs, small deserted islands and beaches of black or golden sand…. The region’s many events, such as the octopus festival and the sea festival, are also great opportunities to discover the history and culture of its inhabitants. Just 1½ hours from Nouméa by car, Thio is definitely a destination worth exploring!
