Practical information for turtle watching
Watching turtles in their natural environment, organised by the Aquarium des Lagons, runs from 13 November 2023 to 3 March 2024, and you can book your session today on the Sud Tourisme website.
The watching season is divided into two periods: “egg-laying” in the evenings from November to January (between 8pm and 11pm) and “emergence” in the mornings of February (between 5am and 8am). Turtle Watching is an exceptional chance to have a magical and timeless moment, but also the perfect opportunity to share, learn, discover, and become a little more aware of our fragile and beautiful environment.
Turtle-watching activity details
Whatever the period, the three-hour event is complete and provides a wealth of knowledge on this fascinating and important subject. The first part takes place at the Bourail Tourist Office, at the entrance to the Deva estate, in a new dedicated area. It includes a briefing at the beginning of the activity, a masterly show to understand the life cycle of turtles, a presentation of the Bwara association and its actions, the presentation of small turtles in tanks, some workshops, and films. This activity will of course have breaks and snacks to make the moment even more enjoyable. For the second part, participants will be asked to take their vehicles to the transit parking lot, where shuttles will be waiting to take them to the precise nesting site. The watching will be supervised by Aquarium des Lagons staff and eco-guards.
This support is particularly important, as it enables us to watch without disturbing the turtles, so that they return year after year with confidence. The positive growth of the juvenile turtle population proves the relevance of such a practice, which respects the life cycle of these animals.
Turtle Watching with the Aquarium des Lagons is a spell-binding break in our busy schedules, a suspended moment during which we can let ourselves be carried away by the magic and exclusivity of the moment. Find all the details of the service on book.sudtourisme.nc
