An activity that lets you dive into history and explore the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Grand Sud for a day. The 18th of November will be the opportunity to discover the new historical and cultural tour organized in partnership with the associations De Pierre & de Jade, Au vieux Grimoire, and Oléti Transport.
The tour schedule
Visitors meet up at the Boulari Tourist Office at 8:00 a.m. and set off on an excursion with Monique, a passionate historian, to explore the American chapel. Listed by the South Province since 2006, this chapel, built during the Second World War, is one of the few remnants of the American presence in New Caledonia. The morning continues with a visit to the old Adventist chapel at Vallon Dore, where Monique tells the fascinating story of the monument. That’s where visitors get a chance to try bookbinding with Emmanuelle, an expert on grimoires. Visitors leave with loads of stories to tell, and with their own creations from the workshop as a personalized souvenir of the experience.
Associations dedicated to passing on knowledge
This activity, sparked by our souvenir-maker, a tourist advisor with the Office du Tourisme du Grand Sud, is designed to promote local heritage and draws on the expertise of two associations committed to passing on cultural heritage.
« De Pierre & de Jade » is an association founded by Monique Vilesseck, a former teacher and connoisseur of the history of the Grand Sud. She’s passionate about sharing history and works hard to highlight the South’s historical sites. The Vieux Grimoire association was created by Emmanuelle Deladriere, who’s been a passionate bookbinder since 1976, and wants to share her knowledge of the art of book conservation with visitors.
